Guinea-Bissau reaffirmed on Saturday, September 26, 2026, its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its Sahara, describing its position as “clear, consistent and unambiguous.”
On the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Guinea-Bissau’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Communities, Fatumata Jau, reiterated her country’s position on the issue.
“I wish to clearly reaffirm Guinea-Bissau’s consistent position regarding the Moroccan Sahara,” the minister said, stressing that her country supports “Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over the Sahara.”
Guinea-Bissau’s foreign minister also recalled that her country had translated this position into action by opening a Consulate General in Dakhla in 2020.
Fatumata Jau also renewed Guinea-Bissau’s support for the Autonomy Plan presented by Morocco, which it considers to be the solution supported by her country for settling this regional dispute.
The minister also welcomed Security Council Resolution 2797 and affirmed Guinea-Bissau’s support for United Nations efforts aimed at reaching a political solution based on the Autonomy Plan under Moroccan sovereignty presented by Rabat.
“Guinea-Bissau’s position is clear, consistent and unambiguous,” Fatumata Jau concluded.
This new statement thus confirms the continuity of Bissau’s official position on the issue of the Moroccan Sahara.
