Eliminated by France in the quarter-finals (2-0), the Atlas Lions leave the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a remarkable campaign. The disappointment is real, but Morocco has earned widespread praise for proudly representing both the nation and the African continent on football's biggest stage.
Morocco's journey came to an end on Thursday in Boston. Defeated 2-0 by France, the Atlas Lions will not reach the semi-finals. Nevertheless, they leave the tournament with their heads held high after once again flying the flags of Morocco and Africa with pride.
Facing a particularly dangerous French side, Morocco did not produce its best performance of the tournament. However, the team showed solidarity, discipline, and remarkable resilience, especially during a first half largely dominated by Les Bleus.
Well organized around an outstanding Yassine Bounou, the Moroccans resisted wave after wave of French attacks. The Atlas Lions' goalkeeper produced several crucial saves, notably denying Kylian Mbappé from the penalty spot in the 28th minute, before winning another one-on-one duel against Désiré Doué.
Going forward, Morocco looked to exploit the right flank through the initiatives of Achraf Hakimi, Brahim Diaz, and Azzedine Ounahi. Their combinations occasionally relieved the pressure but failed to seriously trouble the French defense.
More ambitious after the break, Morocco pushed higher up the pitch and enjoyed more possession. However, France gradually regained control of the game. Mbappé broke the deadlock in the 60th minute, before Ousmane Dembélé doubled the lead six minutes later.
Despite the two-goal deficit, Morocco never gave up. The Atlas Lions continued to fight with courage and dignity until the final whistle.
The elimination is painful, but it does nothing to diminish the value of Morocco's campaign. As the only African nation to reach the quarter-finals, following its historic run in 2022, Morocco has confirmed that it is no longer just a surprise package. The Atlas Lions have firmly established themselves among the world's football elite.
