The race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot is underway. After the opening matches of the tournament, three players are tied at the top of the scoring charts with two goals each: American forward Folarin Balogun, German striker Kai Havertz, and Swedish midfielder Yasin Ayari.

Balogun made an immediate impact by scoring a brace in the United States’ 4-1 victory over Paraguay. The AS Monaco forward became the first American player to score multiple goals in a World Cup match since 1930.

Kai Havertz also shone, netting twice in Germany’s emphatic 7-1 win over Curaçao, further cementing his role as the attacking leader of the Mannschaft.

The surprise package of the tournament so far, however, has been Yasin Ayari. The 22-year-old Swedish midfielder starred against Tunisia, scoring two superb goals that played a key role in Sweden’s convincing 5-1 victory.

Just behind the leading trio, several players have already opened their accounts, including Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyökeres, Jamal Musiala, Giovanni Reyna, Raúl Jiménez, Vinícius Júnior, and Amad Diallo.

For Morocco, Ismael Saibari has also joined the list of scorers after finding the net during the group stage. His goal ensures that the Atlas Lions are represented in a ranking currently dominated by European and American attackers.

The race remains wide open, however. The upcoming matches could quickly reshape the standings in the battle for the tournament’s most prestigious individual scoring award.

According to FIFA regulations, the Golden Boot is awarded to the player who scores the most goals during the tournament. In the event of a tie, the number of assists is taken into account, followed by total playing time, with the advantage going to the player who has played fewer minutes.
