In Zimbabwe, the Bindura University of Science Education (BUSE) is taking a strategic step forward by launching the local assembly of drones, marking its entry into technological production after long focusing on training.

The institution is no longer limited to training operators; it now aims to design and assemble drones for key sectors such as precision agriculture, mining, and environmental monitoring. According to Vice-Chancellor Eddie Mwenje, this development represents a major milestone in the drone program initiated over a year ago.

Supported by the university’s innovation hub, the project is part of a broader approach focused on climate, smart agriculture, food systems, and software development. Through its Department of Communication Sciences, BUSE trains students and professionals in the use of unmanned aerial systems, with practical applications ranging from disaster management to mining operations.

For Eddie Mwenje, this initiative contributes to building a more self-reliant economy by reducing costs, developing local skills, and strengthening the country’s technological sovereignty.

The project aligns fully with Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030, which places science, technology, and industrialization at the heart of national priorities.

Drones are seen as key tools to address climate challenges and improve agricultural yields, particularly through mapping, crop spraying, and cloud seeding.

This progress complements ongoing efforts such as the Palp Technologies factory, which produces digital equipment for the local market and has already helped equip hundreds of schools.

Through these initiatives, Zimbabwe aims to strengthen its research capabilities and gradually establish itself as a player capable of designing and producing its own advanced technologies.
