Gabon has launched its General Population and Housing Census, which will run until February 15. This operation aims to update the country’s demographic indicators and provide essential data to better plan economic and social development.
This general population census operation consists of collecting, in an exhaustive and systematic manner, information on all people living in Gabon as well as on the housing units they occupy.
“For this year, we have decided to use new technologies, with a tablet that geolocates the location, meaning it allows us to identify where the census is being conducted,” said the Minister of Planning and Foresight, Louise Pierrette Mvono.
This census will provide the basic data needed to guide public policies in the areas of housing, health, education, and transport, and to measure the country’s progress in meeting its national and international commitments, according to the Central Bureau of the General Population and Housing Census (RGPL).
According to the latest data from the Ministry of Planning and Foresight, Gabon remains one of the least populated countries on the continent. Its generally stable population increased from 1.8 million inhabitants in 2014 to around 2.3 million between 2022 and 2024, representing an increase of approximately 500,000 people over a decade.
