The Togolese government is strengthening the protection of its natural resources by creating a new oversight body — the General Inspectorate of the Environment.
Togo has officially established the General Inspectorate of the Environment, Forest Resources, and the Coastline. Placed under the direct authority of the Minister of the Environment, this institution is tasked with monitoring and assessing the compliance of economic and social activities with environmental standards.
The inspectorate is organized into two divisions: one responsible for environmental issues and the other for forest and coastal resources. Inspectors from each division report directly to the General Inspectorate.
This initiative aims to enhance transparency and efficiency in the management of natural resources, combat environmental degradation, and promote sustainable governance. Furthermore, an order published on the same date stipulates that the Plateaux region will now have two environmental directorates: one for the Plateaux East, headquartered in Atakpamé, and another for the Plateaux West, based in Kpalimé.
The Plateaux East directorate will cover the environmental services of the prefectures of Est-Mono, Anié, Amou, Ogou, Moyen-Mono, and Haho, while the Plateaux West directorate will include those of Wawa, Danyi, Kloto, Kpélé, and Agou.
