Poland considers the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco in 2007 as “a serious, realistic, and pragmatic basis for a lasting settlement” of the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
Poland thus becomes the 23rd member state of the European Union to support the autonomy plan put forward by Morocco as a means to achieve a definitive resolution of the Moroccan Sahara issue. The plan is backed by more than 120 countries, which, like Poland, favor a final solution within the framework of autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty.
The new official Polish position was expressed by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland, Radosław Sikorski, in a joint communiqué issued on Tuesday, following a telephone conversation with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita.
