An intergovernmental agreement for the construction of a nuclear power plant on Burkinabe soil has just been signed between Burkina Faso and the Russian Federation, according to a press release from Burkina Faso’s Ministry of Energy, Mines and Quarries.

The agreement was signed in Saint Petersburg on the sidelines of an economic forum by Burkina Faso's Minister of Energy, Mines and Quarries, Yacouba Zabré Gouba, and the Director General of the Russian state-owned company ROSATOM, Aleksey Likhachev. This signature marks an important step in the administrative process leading to the implementation of the civilian nuclear power plant project in Burkina Faso.

Following the signing of the agreement, the Russian side—particularly ROSATOM—is expected to submit a technical and financial proposal that will be reviewed by Burkina Faso, the Ministry of Energy specified.

The process of equipping Burkina Faso with a civilian nuclear power plant has progressed rapidly, according to the Russian side. The same source notes that in less than two years, four major documents have already been signed between the two parties.
