The Ghanaian government has approved a 10% increase in the daily minimum wage, which will rise to 19.97 cedis (approximately $1.20) starting March 1.
This decision to improve workers' wages in the West African country takes into account the current economic challenges affecting the cost of living, as well as the sustainability of businesses, according to a statement from the National Tripartite Committee (NTC), which includes representatives of the government, employers, and trade unions.
The committee has suggested that the new daily minimum wage be tax-exempt, in order to ease the financial burden on workers.
It also stated that the effective date for the 2025 minimum wage will be March 1, urging all establishments, institutions, or organizations currently paying below the new wage to adjust accordingly.
The last wage increase for public sector workers in Ghana was in 2024, when the government approved a 25% raise.
