Gabon’s transitional authorities announced on Wednesday the lifting of the curfew that had been in effect for more than a year across the entire national territory.
"The curfew is lifted as of Wednesday, December 18, 2024, until further notice, across the entire national territory," stated Félicien Koyi, Chief of Staff to the Minister of National Defense, in a statement read on national television channel "Gabon 24."
This decision reflects the transitional authorities' ongoing commitment to supporting economic operators across all sectors, he added, further emphasizing that "the defense and security forces are tasked with maintaining order and security in adherence to the rule of law."
The curfew in Gabon was first imposed on September 30, 2023, from 6:00 PM to 5:00 AM. In early May, the curfew hours were adjusted to 2:00 AM to 5:00 AM (instead of midnight to 5:00 AM).
On November 16, the date of the constitutional referendum, Gabonese authorities extended the curfew hours to midnight to 5:00 AM for the duration of the electoral process.
