Burkina Faso is set to receive $167 million in funding from the World Bank under the Health System Performance and Resilience Strengthening Project (PRPRSS).

The World Bank's support for Burkina Faso aims to enhance disease surveillance as well as the quality and accessibility of health and nutrition services in targeted areas of the country.

The project focuses on adolescents, women, children under five, internally displaced persons, and remote communities with limited access to healthcare. It is expected to benefit approximately seven million people across six regions and twenty-two districts in the country.

The World Bank and Burkina Faso’s Ministry of Economy and Finance have expressed their intent to launch this program at the beginning of 2025, following final negotiations scheduled in the coming weeks.

"The health and education sectors have been severely affected, with 413 healthcare facilities (or 20%) impacted as of December 2023, limiting access to care for approximately 3.8 million people," the World Bank stated, highlighting that this situation is due to terrorist attacks.

The number of internally displaced persons increased from fewer than 50,000 in January 2019 to 2.01 million as of March 30, 2023, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
