Ecuador's Foreign Minister informed her Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, that the Republic of Ecuador has ended its recognition of the so-called Sahrawi Republic.
During a phone call with her Moroccan counterpart on Tuesday, October 22, Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld officially announced her country's decision to suspend its recognition of the Polisario's self-proclaimed Sahrawi Republic, which it had recognized in 1983, along with the opening of an "embassy" in 2009.
The minister specified to Nasser Bourita that the notification letter of this decision had been sent to the separatists in Quito, the capital of Ecuador.
Ecuador's decision aligns with the momentum driven by His Majesty King Mohammed VI in recent years, aimed at affirming the Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara and the Autonomy Plan as the only basis for resolving this regional dispute.
The suspension of Ecuador's recognition of the "rasd" marks a new chapter in the relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and this Latin American country.
