Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera has appointed Michael Usi, the Minister of Natural Resources and Climate Change, as the new Vice President following the death of Vice President Saulos Chilima in a plane crash on June 10.

In accordance with the constitution, Chakwera made this announcement seven working days after the vice-presidency became vacant.

Usi, a renowned comedian and actor, was the Vice President of the United Transformation Movement (UTM), a party led by Saulos Chilima.

The Office of the President and the Cabinet announced that the swearing-in ceremony for the new Vice President will take place on Friday afternoon.
