The Chadian government announced, via a decree published on May 13, that the new stadium in N'Djamena will be named after the late President Idriss Déby Itno, in tribute to the man who laid the foundation stone for the project in 2019.
The new stadium, located in the Mandjaffa neighborhood of N'Djamena, will now bear the name of the late President, Marshal Idriss Déby Itno.
This naming honors Idriss Déby Itno, who himself laid the first stone of the project in 2019.
With a capacity of 30,000 seats, this infrastructure, provided by the People's Republic of China, is the largest stadium in Chad after the Idriss Mahamat Ouya Stadium. Its commissioning is expected in the coming months, with a dedicated committee already in place to prepare for the inauguration.
Marshal Déby was killed in April 2021 during a military counteroffensive in the north of the country against the rebels of the Front for Change and Concord (FACT).
Following his death, his son, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, was appointed to lead the transition before being elected as the first president of the Fifth Republic of Chad.
