Togo’s upcoming municipal elections, initially scheduled for July 10, 2025, have been postponed to Thursday, July 17, the Ministry of Territorial Administration announced in a statement relaying a decree issued by the President of the Council.

According to the ministry, this adjustment to the electoral calendar follows requests made by political stakeholders—particularly from the opposition—who unanimously called for a slight delay to ensure better preparation for all parties involved.

The extension also applies to the candidate nomination period. The original deadline of May 29 has been pushed back to Sunday, June 1, 2025, at midnight. This extension provides potential candidates additional time to finalize their applications and comply with administrative requirements.

The revised calendar also affects the early voting process for defense, security, and paramilitary forces, who will now vote on Monday, July 14, three days before the general population. This measure is intended to allow them to ensure law and order and provide security on election day.

As for the electoral campaign, it will officially begin on Tuesday, July 1 at 12:00 AM, and will end on Tuesday, July 15 at 11:59 PM. During this period, political parties, independent lists, and candidates will be able to present their programs to voters across the country.

In a second statement issued the same day, the ministry also addressed the number of seats to be filled in this election. The total number of municipal councilors, which had been increased to 1,667 by a decree on May 21, has been restored to its original level of 1,527, in accordance with the 2018 legal provisions.

These municipal elections are the second local elections organized in Togo since the reintroduction of communes in 2019, as part of the country’s decentralization process, according to the Togolese press.
