The legislative elections in Guinea-Bissau "will indeed take place before the end of the year and will be entirely funded by the state," President Umaro Sissoco Embalo declared in Bissau.

"I am waiting for the Technical Support Office for the Electoral Process to complete its work so that I can invite all the political parties represented in Parliament to propose a date for the election," the president added in a press address following a Council of Ministers meeting.

"The government will cover all expenses related to organizing these elections, as it is a matter of sovereignty," he emphasized.

The last legislative elections held in Guinea-Bissau were won by the Pai-Terra Ranka coalition (opposition), led by the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC).
