The "D-day" has arrived in Chad. Voting for the first round of the Chadian presidential election is taking place this Monday, May 6.

Approximately 8.2 million voters are called to the polls in Chad to choose who will lead the country for the next five years, after three years of transition. Chad will become the first country in West Africa and Central Africa under military transition to hold an election. The outcome of its presidential election is highly anticipated.

Ten candidates are running, including the transitional president Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, Prime Minister Masra Succès, and former Prime Minister Albert Pahimi Padacke, appointed head of the transitional government after the death of Idriss Déby.

Nearly 26,536 polling stations, including 90 abroad, are already welcoming voters.

The provisional results of this first round are to be published on May 21, and the final results will be proclaimed by the Constitutional Council on June 5.

If a second round is needed, it is scheduled for June 22, 2024.
