Since last March, floods hitting Kenya have resulted in 188 deaths and 165,000 displaced people, according to a new government report.

The Kenyan government's report on the recent flooding accounts for the deaths of 35 people. Additionally, 125 individuals were injured while 90 people are reported missing, according to the same source.

Furthermore, thousands of people have been displaced from their homes due to the floods, with many villages completely submerged by water. The Kenyan authorities have initiated rescue and relief operations to assist those trapped by the floods and to provide support to the affected communities.

The floods have also caused significant agricultural losses, affecting the livelihoods of farmers and exacerbating food problems in certain areas. Essential infrastructure such as drinking water networks and sanitation systems have been damaged, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases in the affected zones.

Moreover, several other East African countries, including Tanzania and Burundi, are facing the devastating consequences of seasonal rains intensified by El Niño. Since the onset of the rainy season, heavy rainfall, amplified by the El Niño phenomenon, has caused devastating floods, leading to the destruction of roads, bridges, and other infrastructure. Local authorities have urged the population to remain vigilant as weather forecasts predict more heavy rain in the coming days, which could worsen the flooding situation.
