Ethiopia’s new government aims to place national unity, peace and dialogue at the heart of its agenda.
President Taye Atske Selassie outlined these priorities during a joint session of the House of Peoples’ Representatives and the House of Federation, urging the country to move beyond conflict and focus on development and prosperity.
According to the president, the government’s priority will be to preserve Ethiopia’s unity while building a shared national vision based on common aspirations and collective responsibility.
Breaking Away from Violent Politics
Taye Atske Selassie stressed the need for a lasting transformation of Ethiopia’s political culture. The government intends to promote peace, dialogue, knowledge and mutual understanding to end the cycle of armed conflict.
The president called for an end to the violent and confrontational political practices that have marked Ethiopia’s recent history. He also emphasized the need to translate recommendations from the National Dialogue Conference into concrete measures.
According to the head of state, Ethiopians have clearly expressed their desire for peace and stability while rejecting war and violence.
“Attempts to drag Ethiopia back into cycles of violence will ultimately fail,” he declared, urging citizens to embrace dialogue and national responsibility.
Development as a Priority
Beyond security concerns, the government plans to accelerate efforts to promote development and improve living standards.
Taye Atske Selassie highlighted the importance of productive work, discipline, knowledge and individual commitment in building national prosperity. He also stressed that achieving the country’s strategic objectives would require stronger expertise, critical thinking and the ability to turn ideas into action.
Ethiopia must also continue strengthening its national capabilities, particularly in technology and strategic sectors. The president emphasized the importance of technological self-reliance and developing national defense capabilities.
A Call for Collective Responsibility
Taye Atske Selassie praised the role of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces and federal security forces, describing them as essential to protecting citizens and safeguarding national sovereignty.
However, he stressed that preserving peace and unity should not be the responsibility of the state alone. Protecting Ethiopia, maintaining stability and building prosperity must be shared responsibilities between the government and its citizens.
The president urged Ethiopians to demonstrate their commitment to the country through productive work, respect for national responsibilities and the defense of peace and sovereignty.
In his address, Taye Atske Selassie also called for the concept of “Ethiopianism” to be translated into everyday actions, reflected in dialogue among citizens, productive work and daily interactions.
The head of state expressed confidence in the new government’s ability to meet public expectations through integrity, loyalty, competence and commitment.
As Ethiopia enters the year 2019 under its national calendar, the president’s message is clear: national unity, peace and development must form the foundations of the country’s future.
