On the eve of the highly anticipated Morocco–Mali clash, part of the second matchday of Group A at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Mali head coach Tom Saintfiet expressed confidence.
Speaking at a press conference, the Belgian coach first reflected on the circumstances in which Mali approach this crucial encounter, following a frustrating opening match that ended in a draw against Zambia.
“We are starting our second match in an extremely tough group. The draw against Zambia left us with a feeling of unfinished business, because we had what it takes to win. This result puts us under pressure ahead of facing Morocco, who in my opinion are the best team in Africa and one of the strongest in the world,” he acknowledged, as quoted by Africa Top Sports.
Aware of the quality of their opponents, Tom Saintfiet said his staff had carefully analyzed Morocco’s opening match against Comoros.
“Morocco delivered a very strong performance. We studied that match closely. That said, Mali remain a solid team, made up of top-level players. Morocco are the clear favorites, but our ambition is to go as far as possible in this tournament,” he affirmed.
The Mali coach also praised the commitment and passion of Malian supporters, who were already out in large numbers during the first match.
“Our supporters are always behind us. They sing, they cheer, and that gives us precious energy. It’s now up to us to live up to our responsibilities and be worthy ambassadors of Malian football,” he concluded.
The Morocco–Mali match is scheduled for this Friday at 8:00 p.m. GMT, at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
