The National Resistance Movement (NRM), Uganda’s ruling party, has approved the candidacy of incumbent President Yoweri Museveni for a seventh presidential term.

The decision by the National Resistance Movement (NRM) was confirmed during the party’s National Delegates’ Conference.

Immediately after the announcement, Museveni thanked his supporters for once again entrusting him with the presidency of the party as well as the mandate to represent it in the presidential election scheduled for January 12, 2026. He declared that the party "has succeeded in maintaining peace over the past 40 years. This may be the first time in 600 years that this region has experienced continuous peace.”

The announcement comes after Yoweri Museveni, 80, who has been in power since 1986, was nominated last July as the sole candidate for the party’s presidency and for another presidential term. At the time, he stated that if re-elected, he would focus on improving citizens’ well-being and on national development.

The next elections will take place between January and February 2026.
