Senegal and Mauritania have taken a significant step in their bilateral relations with the signing, on June 2, 2025, in Nouakchott, of an agreement on the conditions of entry, stay, and residence, replacing the 1972 accord.
The new agreement between Senegal and Mauritania aims to facilitate the mobility of people between the two states while respecting security and identification requirements. It introduces significant measures to ease procedures.
The agreement stipulates that entry into Mauritanian territory must occur at an official entry point with the presentation of a valid National Identity Card (CNI) or passport, with no proof of subsistence required.
The text defines three categories of stay. For short stays, only a copy of the CNI or passport and the original consular card are required, with no proof of subsistence needed.
For long stays, Senegalese nationals must present a copy of their CNI or passport, the consular card, and pay a processing fee of 5,000 FCFA (300 ouguiyas) for a one-year stay, compared to 50,000 FCFA previously.
A major innovation: for the first application, no work contract or proof of financial means will be required. Only the annual renewal of the residence permit will require income documentation.
This agreement marks a new milestone in Senegalese-Mauritanian relations and is expected to significantly ease the movement of people between the two neighboring countries.
