Guinea’s population is now estimated at approximately 17 million people, according to the progress report of the fourth General Census of Population and Housing, published in Conakry.
"The initial projection was 14.3 million inhabitants. Today, we are at 17 million," revealed Ismaël Nabé, Guinea’s Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, speaking during the third session of the National Census Council.
The minister urged active involvement of government members in raising public awareness, mobilizing additional resources, and accelerating the implementation of the remaining phases.
Launched in February 2024, the census has seen its budget revised upward, with an increase of 20% to 30% compared to initial estimates. Despite these challenges, the government plans to conclude the census operations by June.
According to the government, the main goals of the General Census are to provide relevant, reliable, and up-to-date indicators on the size, structure, geographic distribution, and natural and migratory movements of the population, as well as household living conditions, in order to facilitate the development, implementation, and monitoring of sectoral development policies and strategies.
