The accession of Mauritania to the rotating presidency of the African Union (AU) is a well-deserved recognition, given its role as a stabilizing force in the region, stated the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Residing Abroad, Nasser Bourita.
"This is a well-deserved recognition considering Mauritania's role, under the leadership of President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, as a stabilizing force in the region and its positive role regarding a range of issues at the African continent level," said Nasser Bourita to the Mauritanian news website "Sahara Media," on the sidelines of the African Union Summit being held in Addis Ababa.
"In compliance with the High Instructions of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco supported Mauritania's candidacy, given the neighboring ties and strong bilateral relations between Morocco and Mauritania," added Nasser Bourita.
He emphasized that the Mauritanian President "knows he can count on Morocco's support, in accordance with the Royal Instructions, to ensure the success of this presidency."
The Islamic Republic of Mauritania has been assuming the rotating presidency of the African Union since Saturday, February 17, 2024.
