Nigeria and Spain have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at establishing political and diplomatic consultations.

The agreement, signed by Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar and his Spanish counterpart José Albares, seeks to institutionalize a mechanism for regular dialogue. “This dialogue will enable progress on issues of mutual interest and strengthen cooperation between the two nations,” affirmed the foreign ministers of both countries.

This accord is part of the Spain-Africa Strategy 2025–2028 and follows a meeting between the two ministers to enhance bilateral relations. Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to “strengthening collaboration in various sectors, including economic development, security, education, energy, and the fight against climate change,” according to the official statement.

Nigeria and Spain have maintained close cooperation for several years, particularly in trade. Spain is one of Nigeria’s main clients, especially for crude oil and gas exports.

In January 2023, both countries expressed their commitment to deepen partnerships in investment and the development of Nigerian gas resources for the global energy market.
