Former Gabonese President Ali Bongo has ended his hunger strike. The ex-head of state had stopped eating on May 14 to demand the release of his wife and eldest son.

Due to the risks to his already severely deteriorated health following a stroke he suffered in October 2018, Ali Bongo was forced by his family to end the hunger strike he had been observing since mid-May to demand the release of his wife and eldest son.

He lasted two weeks.

"His entourage begged him to stop. He had lost weight, and his mobility had deteriorated," a close source told Gabonese media.

With this hunger strike, Ali Bongo managed to strike a deal with the ruling military to benefit his two youngest sons, Jalil and Bilal, who eventually left their father's residence in Libreville to return to London, where they now reside.

Ali Bongo is currently in good health.

Following the end of his hunger strike, there have been significant developments. Ali Bongo's wife and eldest son were released from custody, although details of the terms of their release remain unclear. The former president has expressed his relief and gratitude to his supporters and family for their unwavering support during this challenging period.

Ali Bongo's health continues to be a topic of concern for his family and supporters. Medical professionals have advised him to prioritize his well-being and avoid actions that could further compromise his health.
