At 40 years old, Generalamat Idriss Déby Itno, head of the military junta in power for three years, was elected president of Chad with 61% of the votes on May 6, according to the final results proclaimed a week ago by the Constitutional Council.

This inauguration marks the end of the transition period that the man had been leading since the death of his father, President Idriss Déby Itno, who been in power for three decades. Newly invested, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno also appointed Allamaye Halina as Prime Minister, according to a presidential decree read on Thursday on public television.

Halina served as Director General of State Protocol under the late Idriss Déby Itno and his son Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno for 13 years. In January 2023, he was appointed as Chad's ambassador to China.

The inauguration of the new president took place in the presence of several heads of state and government, as well as representatives of international organizations, highlighting the importance of this moment for the future of Chad.

These elections and the subsequent appointments come in a tense political context marked by protests and allegations of electoral fraud. One of the main opposition leaders, Success Masra, strongly denounced the results, stating that the electoral process was tainted by irregularities. He called for a peaceful mobilization to demand transparency and justice in the country's governance.

Chad, rich in natural resources, faces numerous challenges, including security, economic stability, and social development. Expectations are high for Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, who will have to demonstrate his ability to unite the country and implement profound reforms to meet the aspirations of the Chadian people.
