The activities of political parties and those of a political nature of associations "are prohibited until further notice" in Mali for public order reasons, announced on Wednesday, government spokesperson Colonel Abdoulaye Maïga.

In a special broadcast on national television, reporting on the decision adopted in the Council of Ministers that same day, Colonel Maiga stated that "this restrictive measure follows the observation of the multiplication of subversive activities by parties and associations, in the face of the multiple challenges the country is facing."

According to the government, "despite the willingness and availability of the authorities to act with the consensus of the people and the clarity of the legislative and regulatory provisions that govern the actions of political parties and other forms of political organizations, the subversive actions of political parties and their allies are only multiplying."

In light of these findings, for public order reasons, "the draft decree adopted suspends the activities of political parties and the political activities of associations until further notice throughout the national territory," announces its spokesperson.

The government reminds that the national law on associations "does not allow political parties to form groupings in the associative form. Whereas "these groupings are constituted in the form of undeclared associations that no longer have legal existence since the adoption of Ordinance No. 2024-008/PT-RM of March 28, 2024, amending the law relating to associations," explains the document.

Consequently, the Malian authorities have prohibited the media from any publication on the activities of political parties. Following the suspension of the activities of political parties, the High Authority for Communication "invites all media (radio, TV, written and online newspapers) to stop all broadcasting and publication of activities of political parties and the political activities of associations," it orders in a statement.
