Invited on the national MRTV channel on May 13, Chadian Minister of Communication and government spokesperson, Gassim Chérif, expressed his desire to see his country join the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
"I think it would be a good thing for Chad to join the Alliance of Sahel States," said Gassim Chérif, praising the AES as "a great experience" that N'Djamena should "seriously consider," reports the African news agency.
According to him, this membership would align with the transitional president, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno's, aim to restore Chad's sovereignty.
"He started this dynamic by breaking defense agreements with Paris. Now we need to act on other aspects related to our sovereignty: the CFA franc, the economy, geostrategy, and managing our resources with our own framework," emphasized Gassim Chérif, calling for "uncomplicated" debates.
He also advocated for expanding the AES, which currently includes Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, to other countries in the region, believing that this regional initiative should be strengthened.
However, the minister made sure to clarify that his comments reflect only his personal views and do not represent the official position of the Chadian government.
