Cheikh Tidiane Dièye, a candidate for the presidential election on March 24 in Senegal, announced on Wednesday, March 20, his decision to withdraw from the race.

The withdrawal of Cheikh Tidiane Dièye comes just before the end of the electoral campaign, which now brings the number of candidates to 18.

Cheikh Tidiane Dièye, who made this announcement during a press conference in the Senegalese capital, called on his supporters to vote for candidate Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

The Constitution of Senegal stipulates that if one of the candidates withdraws before the first round, "the election will proceed with the other candidates." Accordingly, the Constitutional Council will modify the list of candidates. The date of the election remains the same. The presidential election will indeed take place on March 24.

Approximately 7,033,854 registered voters in the electoral roll will elect the fifth President of the Republic, after Léopold Sédar Senghor, Abdou Diouf, Abdoulaye Wade, and Macky Sall.

The provisional results of the first round of the presidential election will be announced by the National Vote Counting Commission no later than April 1, 2024, which is one day before the end of Macky Sall's term.
