John Dramani Mahama, the main opposition candidate in Ghana's December presidential election, announced Thursday that his vice-presidential running mate will be former education minister Jane Opoku-Agyemang.

This is the second time that John Mahama has chosen Jane Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate. “Her integrity, dedication and vision for a better Ghana make her the ideal candidate to join me,” the opposition leader said in a statement.

“She was a teacher for a long time, before becoming a minister and she is one of you,” Mahama declared in the meeting to announce his running mate.

The presidential election in Ghana promises to be close between Mahamudu Bawumia, first Muslim candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), and former President John Dramani Mahama, of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In 2022, Ghana experienced its worst economic crisis in decades, with inflation of more than 50%, forcing this major producer of gold, oil and cocoa to take out a $3 billion loan from of the IMF and to carry out a restructuring of its debt.
