Burundi has unveiled new ambitions to improve access to safe drinking water and sanitation services.
The government aims to ensure that 80% of the population has access to these essential services by 2040, with the goal of achieving universal coverage by 2060.
The roadmap was presented during the Water Forward Africa Forum, held in N'Djamena. Representing Burundi, Francine Inarukundo, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Finance, unveiled the 2026–2031 Water Pact, a program designed to accelerate investment in the sector.
The plan includes strengthening the regulatory framework, expanding drinking water supply infrastructure, particularly in schools and health centers, and modernizing sanitation services.
To achieve these objectives, Bujumbura also plans to increase the mobilization of public, private, and climate financing, while making greater use of public-private partnerships (PPPs) to accelerate project implementation and sustainably improve access to basic services.
