The 2026 FIFA World Cup is already delivering its first verdicts. After part of the second round of group-stage matches, the hierarchy is beginning to take shape across the tournament’s 12 groups.
With its new 48-team format, the competition promised surprises. However, the reality on the pitch is quickly catching up with the underdogs: only the top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third-placed teams, will advance to the Round of 32. This demanding qualification system is already narrowing the field.
Some nations wasted no time in securing their places in the knockout stage. Germany (Group E), the United States (Group D), and Mexico (Group A) have become the first teams officially qualified for the next round.
Behind them, several other teams are in an excellent position. Japan, the Netherlands, Morocco, Switzerland, and Canada, all with four points, have also effectively secured their places.
According to projections from specialized statistical models, their qualification is now considered virtually certain.
The race for the Round of 16 is underway, and the final bracket is already taking shape.
