The outgoing President of Djibouti, Ismaïl Omar Guelleh, has been re-elected for a sixth term, according to provisional results published on Saturday by the Ministry of the Interior.

In the presidential election held on April 10, the candidate of the Union for the Presidential Majority won 97.81% of the vote, compared to his opponent Mohamed Farah Samatar, who received 2.19%.

Aged 78 and in power since 1999, Ismaïl Omar Guelleh had claimed victory early in the day via the social network X, before the official results were announced.

Located in the Horn of Africa, Djibouti holds a major strategic position on the Red Sea, as a crossroads of global trade and a key player in the fight against piracy and terrorism.
