Ethiopia and the World Bank have signed a $250 million agreement to strengthen urban communities and boost youth employment.

According to Ethiopia’s Ministry of Finance, this funding will allow the government to scale up its efforts to improve the incomes of disadvantaged urban populations and will also help facilitate better integration of young people and women into the labor market.

To achieve this, the main interventions will focus on the creation of labor-intensive public works jobs, as well as the provision of financial support aimed at improving the living conditions of vulnerable urban households.

The financing will support youth employment promotion in line with the national job creation plan and will expand assistance to refugees and host communities in selected areas, the ministry said.

It will also help strengthen social protection systems through cash transfers and services that promote the social and economic reintegration of beneficiaries.
