In Malawi, the provisional results of the presidential election held on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, mark the return of former head of state Peter Mutharika.

According to the results announced on Wednesday, September 24, by the Electoral Commission, Peter Mutharika secured 55% of the votes cast, far ahead of his opponent’s 33%.

In an address to the nation on Wednesday, outgoing president Lazarus Chakwera acknowledged his defeat, as the Electoral Commission was already reporting a wide lead for his rival.

"I know that, for the majority of you who voted, this result reflects your collective will for a change of government. It is therefore right for me to concede defeat, out of respect for your will as citizens,” he declared.

Chakwera thanked all Malawians for their support over the past five years.

In the latest update of the official presidential election results published on Monday, Mutharika had amassed over two million votes, compared to more than 700,000 votes for Chakwera.
