Former Kenyan Vice President Rigathi Gachagua has officially announced his candidacy for the 2027 presidential election.

Once close to William Ruto, the current president whom he supported in his rise to power, Gachagua is now at odds with the head of state.

He was impeached by Parliament and then by the Senate, becoming the first vice president to be removed from office since the adoption of the 2010 Constitution.

He is accused of supporting anti-government demonstrations and of being involved in corruption cases — accusations he flatly rejects, calling them "baseless.”

Since his ouster, the former foreign minister has stepped up his efforts to rally supporters, particularly in his home region of Mount Kenya, where he is seeking to build a strong electoral base.

His candidacy comes just a few months after the launch, on May 15, of his new political party: the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), which he intends to use as the platform for his campaign.
