The government of Burkina Faso has adopted a decree in the Council of Ministers dissolving the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI).

According to a statement released by the Burkinabè presidency, this decision is part of “the rebuilding of the State and the ongoing institutional reforms aimed at streamlining the government’s operating costs.

” Minister of Territorial Administration and Mobility, Emile Zerbo, stated after the Council meeting that the CENI received an annual subsidy of approximately half a billion CFA francs (around 885,328 USD), and that the continued existence of the body is now inconsistent with the provisions of the Transition Charter and overly burdensome on the national budget.

Zerbo added that the proposed legislation transfers CENI’s electoral responsibilities back to the Ministry of Territorial Administration, as was the case in the past.
