The transitional president of Guinea, General Mamadi Doumbouya, has announced the creation of a General Directorate of Elections, in preparation for a referendum on a new Constitution scheduled for September 21.
The announcement of this new structure was made through a decree read on national television.
According to the decree, the directorate will be responsible, in particular, for "organizing political elections and referendums in the Republic of Guinea" and for "establishing and updating the biometric electoral register based on the national civil registry and the national register of individuals on a continuous basis."
The new body will also "participate in the creation and operationalization of a special force for election security," marking a significant step in preparations for the return to constitutional order.
President Doumbouya had promised that 2025 would be a "crucial electoral year to complete the return to constitutional order."
In April, the ruling authorities announced the organization of this referendum on a new Constitution for September 21.
In addition, Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah stated in May that everything would be done to ensure that presidential and legislative elections are held in Guinea in "December" 2025.
