Rwanda has announced its withdrawal from the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS).
Rwanda’s decision to leave ECCAS was made following the 26th Ordinary Summit of the organization, held on Saturday in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.
In a statement issued by the Rwandan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Rwanda expressed regret that its right to the rotating presidency, as stipulated in Article 6 of the founding treaty, was “deliberately ignored” during the summit, leading to its decision to withdraw from ECCAS.
Founded in 1983, ECCAS is composed of eleven member states: Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Chad.
