Guinean Prime Minister Amadou Bah Oury announced on Monday, May 12, that the legislative and presidential elections will be held in December 2025.

"On September 21, 2025, the constitutional referendum will be held. In December 2025, both the presidential and legislative elections will take place," he said.

This announcement comes nearly five months after the transitional president, General Mamadi Doumbouya, promised, in his speech to the nation on December 31, 2024, that a constitutional referendum would be organized in the first quarter of 2025.

He had called 2025 a "crucial" year for organizing all upcoming elections: presidential, legislative, local elections, and for the full resumption of political activities.

In this context, the government received 3,000 biometric enrollment kits in April, marking an important step in the electoral process. These kits, received by the Prime Minister, consist of computers, fingerprint sensors, GPS systems, and iris recognition devices. According to the authorities, they aim to ensure "the uniqueness of the Guinean citizen."

It is worth noting that Guinea has been under military rule since September 5, 2021, when President Alpha Condé was overthrown by Colonel Doumbouya. Upon taking power, Doumbouya promised to fight against injustice and corruption while ensuring a return to constitutional order. Initially, the authorities had committed to organizing a referendum and transferring power to elected civilians by the end of 2024, a timeline that has now been pushed back.

The head of state will face numerous challenges, including excessive dependence on mining, financial fragility, and political instability.
