Ghana’s capital, Accra, will be decked out in ECOWAS colors on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, to mark the official launch of the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the West African regional organization.
Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama will kick off the commemorative activities for this milestone anniversary.
The Accra ceremony will feature vibrant performances, including the unveiling of the Golden Jubilee logo and theme, along with cultural and artistic presentations that retrace ECOWAS’s history—from its founding in Lagos by the Founding Fathers, through major reforms, to the significant successes and progress achieved across member states.
Ministers and high-level dignitaries from ECOWAS member states are expected to attend this symbolic event, which will kick off a series of celebrations scheduled to take place in all ECOWAS capitals throughout this anniversary year.
According to a statement released by the APO Group on behalf of the Economic Community of West African States, the Conference of Heads of State and Government strongly recommended that the 50th anniversary be marked with high visibility in each member state.
In line with this directive, members of the ECOWAS Administration and Finance Committee held a virtual meeting in February 2025 to approve the regional program of celebrations.
Founded on May 28, 1975, in Lagos, Nigeria, ECOWAS remains the most structured regional economic community on the continent today, with numerous achievements contributing to the integration and development of West African populations.
