Togo’s first Senate concluded its inaugural session—opened about a month ago—with the election of its executive bureau. Wednesday, April 2, 2025, marked a key step in finalizing the structure of the new legislative body.

Barry Moussa Barqué, a long-standing and influential figure in Togolese politics, was elected President of the country’s newly established upper chamber of Parliament for a six-year term. He will lead a nine-member executive bureau. This election represents the culmination of the Senate’s installation process.

Following the inaugural session, senators adopted their internal rules, laying the groundwork for future parliamentary operations.

The 61 senators—41 elected and 20 appointed by the Head of State, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé—will reconvene on Thursday, April 3, 2025, for their first ordinary session.
