The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Alieu Touray, was received on February 26, 2025, by Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama to discuss the organization's future and current challenges, particularly following the withdrawal of countries that formed the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). President Mahama took the opportunity to clarify his stance regarding this regional grouping.

Accompanied by Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, and Gana Lawan, ECOWAS Resident Representative in Ghana, Dr. Touray provided an overview of the current situation and the emergency measures implemented following the recent departures of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.

President Mahama praised ECOWAS' efforts in preserving regional unity and reaffirmed Ghana's commitment to supporting the organization's missions related to good governance, economic integration, and security. He emphasized the importance of continuing dialogue with AES member states to facilitate their reintegration.

In this regard, he announced the appointment of a Special Envoy from Ghana tasked with facilitating discussions and promoting regional stability.

"ECOWAS has brought countless benefits to Ghana, particularly in governance, trade, and major infrastructure projects. It is essential that we continue working together to strengthen this cooperation," President Mahama declared.

As the regional organization prepares to commemorate its 50th anniversary, President Mahama informed Dr. Touray that a special committee and a dedicated budget have been set up in Ghana to support the celebrations.

For his part, the Commission President presented preparations for a special summit aimed at repositioning ECOWAS in the face of current challenges and strengthening its role on the global stage.

Established on May 28, 1975, with the signing of the Lagos Treaty, ECOWAS currently comprises 12 member states and aims to promote economic integration, peace, and prosperity in West Africa.
