The presidential and legislative elections in Guinea-Bissau will take place on November 30, 2025, President Umaro Sissoco Embalo announced on Sunday.
"The elections (presidential and legislative) will be held on November 30, 2025. I will soon sign a decree to that effect," he told the press.
The end of the Guinea-Bissau president's mandate has been a subject of controversy for several weeks, with opposition parties arguing that his term expires on February 27, 2025.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of Guinea-Bissau ruled in early February that Embalo's mandate will end on September 4, 2025.
Embalo was sworn in for a five-year term on February 27, 2020. His election was eventually recognized by the international community, despite an initial dispute by opposition leader and former Prime Minister Domingos Simoes Pereira.
Pereira had filed a legal challenge with the Supreme Court, which took months before ultimately ruling in favor of Embalo on September 4, 2020.
However, Pereira has never acknowledged Embalo's victory, insisting that the election was "fraudulent."
In December 2023, Embalo dissolved the opposition-controlled Parliament, three days after armed clashes that he described as an attempted coup.
He initially scheduled early legislative elections for November 24, 2024, but later postponed them indefinitely via a presidential decree, citing logistical and financial difficulties.
