The Union for the Republic (Unir), Togo's ruling party, has won the country's first-ever senatorial elections, securing 34 out of 41 Senate seats, the Togolese Electoral Commission announced on Sunday.

The majority of seats were claimed by Unir, while the remaining few were won by other political parties, including ADDI and UFC, as well as independent candidates, according to provisional results from the February 15 senatorial elections. This marks a crucial step in the establishment of new institutions outlined in the country's recent constitutional reform.

The Senate will comprise a total of 61 members, with 20 appointed by the President of the Council of Ministers. In total, 1,527 municipal councilors and 179 regional councilors were called to elect senators on Saturday.

In accordance with the new Constitution, this senatorial election—the first in the nation's history—paves the way for the election of the President of the Republic and the inauguration of the President of the Council.

Adopted in May 2024, Togo's new Constitution establishes a parliamentary system, in which the President is elected by Parliament for a single six-year term.
