Ivory Coast is set to establish an ionospheric monitoring station, a facility dedicated to strengthening scientific research and air navigation. The station will be installed at the airport in the city of San Pédro with the support of UNESCO.
The new Ivorian ionospheric station is part of the "MoNEWIC" program, an initiative that brings together UNESCO, the European Space Agency, the German Aerospace Center, and other scientific institutions.
A ceremony for the handover of ionospheric monitoring equipment was recently held in Abidjan, attended by Jean Bosco, Deputy Head of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Office in Ivory Coast.
Once operational, the station will collect essential data on electromagnetic phenomena that affect telecommunications, air navigation, and flight safety, according to the Ivorian Press Agency (AIP).
It will also play a key role in anticipating and managing electromagnetic disturbances that can disrupt radio communications, GPS signals, and air navigation.
"We firmly believe that science and technology are pillars of sustainable development. With this ionospheric monitoring station, Ivory Coast strengthens its position in global scientific research and actively contributes to the understanding of atmospheric and space phenomena," stated Bosco on this occasion.
