In Africa, the video game market generated over $1 billion in revenue in 2024, according to a report published by Maliyo Games, a Nigeria-based video game development studio. This impressive performance is attributed to improved connectivity, the growing adoption of smartphones, and a youth population increasingly inclined toward technology.

Titled the “2025 Africa Games Industry Report”, the document highlights that the revenue growth in this market is primarily driven by mobile video games, which now account for nearly 90% of the market. This surge is fueled by the increasing affordability of smartphones, enhanced broadband network connectivity, and continuous innovation by African gaming studios, which develop mobile games inspired by "local narratives." These games have gained significant popularity both in Africa and internationally, with notable contributions from studios such as Maliyo Games, Kiro’o Games, and Nyamakop.

While mobile games continue to dominate the market across the continent, console and PC gaming are gradually gaining traction in countries like Nigeria, South Africa, Morocco, and Algeria.

In these nations, global players like PlayStation and Xbox have made significant inroads, contributing to the rise of an expanding audience for console gaming. Similarly, PC gaming is growing, with studios like South Africa’s Nyamakop creating games specifically designed for this platform.

Esports (competitive multiplayer online gaming) is also experiencing rapid growth, with popular tournaments such as Comic Con Africa and The African Esports Championship drawing large audiences.

Sports-themed games like EA SPORTS FCF and eFootball have each generated $10 million in revenue, reflecting African gamers' passion for football-related games.

Additionally, the report reveals that Africa’s video game industry ecosystem is witnessing explosive growth, driven by a community of passionate developers and a rapidly expanding player base.
