Côte d’Ivoire is preparing to establish a space agency (ASCI), which will operate under the supervision of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, in coordination with other relevant ministries.

On this occasion, the Ivorian government, during its most recent Council of Ministers meeting, adopted the decree establishing the ASCI, which is intended to be a public institution with administrative, scientific, and technological status.

Government spokesperson Amadou Coulibaly stated that the ASCI will be created with the goal of promoting the peaceful use and exploitation of outer space, and will be responsible for strengthening national capabilities and establishing the infrastructure necessary for the development of the space sector in Côte d’Ivoire.

The agency’s missions will extend to the main application areas of space, including Earth observation, space meteorology, astronomy, space exploration, satellite navigation, and communications, he explained.

Through this initiative, Côte d’Ivoire aims to effectively address challenges related to economic development, national security, and environmental protection, by adopting space technologies.

Specifically, ASCI will use space technologies to better manage natural resources and to anticipate climate-related disasters.

According to the Ivorian government, this project is part of a clear vision: to strengthen technological sovereignty and promote innovation and sustainable development.

To bring this project to life, Ivorian authorities plan to develop the necessary infrastructure to support this strategic sector.
