Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister of Dominica, highlighted urgent global challenges, emphasizing the importance of honesty and dialogue between nations to tackle them. He stressed the need to address global problems transparently and to promote closer collaboration between the Global South and the Global North.

“There must be honest discussions and dialogue between nations about the challenges we face,” Skerrit said at the 16th MEDays Forum. Referring to climate change, he noted the importance of the UN’s Conference of the Parties (COP) but lamented the lack of concrete commitments from Northern countries. “The reality is that while the Global North shows empathy for the Global South’s issues, it is unwilling to take the necessary steps to solve them,” he stated.

For Skerrit, it is vital for the Global South to recognize this dynamic and work together to find lasting solutions. “It is important for us in the Global South to collaborate and unite to address our challenges,” he added.

Leadership and Global Challenges

The Prime Minister stressed the urgent need for more courageous global leadership. “In the New World Order, we need braver leaders,” he said, calling for action beyond rhetoric. Leaders, he insisted, must uphold principles of justice, equality, and peace. “Too many are afraid to speak up or address problems, negotiating words instead of principles,” he noted.

Skerrit urged leaders to prioritize international cooperation, stressing that global problems require collective solutions: “The issues from one country affect others. You cannot solve them alone.”

Morocco’s Role

Skerrit praised King Mohammed VI of Morocco for his leadership, highlighting the King’s commitment to international cooperation and respect for international law. “The initiative he launched is crucial as it helps the Global South address and define solutions to its challenges,” he concluded.
